What are copays, coinsurance, and deductibles?

When using insurance, you may still be responsible for part of the cost of your care.

These costs are determined by your insurance plan and typically fall into three categories: copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.

💳 Copay

A copay is a fixed amount you pay for each visit.

For example:
    •    your plan may require a $20 or $40 copay per session

If your plan includes a copay, that amount may be charged after your appointment.

📊 Coinsurance

Coinsurance is a percentage of the cost that you are responsible for.

For example:
    •    if your plan has 20% coinsurance
    •    your insurance pays 80%
    •    you are responsible for the remaining 20%

Coinsurance usually applies after your deductible has been met.

🧾 Deductible

A deductible is the amount you must pay out of pocket before your insurance begins covering costs.

For example:
    •    if your deductible is $1,000
    •    you may need to pay the full cost of sessions until that amount is reached

After your deductible is met, your insurance may begin covering part of your care.

🤔 Why might I still receive a bill?

Even if your insurance includes nutrition benefits, you may still receive a bill if:
    •    your deductible has not been met
    •    your plan includes coinsurance
    •    your plan requires a copay

⚠️ Important to know
    •    Costs vary depending on your specific insurance plan
    •    Insurance verification provides an estimate, not a guarantee
    •    Final costs are determined after your insurance processes the claim
